This poem is by far one of my favourites I’ve ever written, and to celebrate finally reading it aloud at a poetry open mic, I wanted to share it here. I wrote this in the late hours of a cold winter night beside a warm body, a warm body who was a great test to my self-restraint and insatiable appetite. Forbidden Fruit was first published in Moonbow Magazine’s third issue Amorevolous in 2024, but I’ve since changed the grammar and I like it far better now.
(If you want to see a video of me reading this poem out loud you can find it here on my Instagram @k.omearapoetry)
Forbidden Fruit
In this bed, I lay with
The apple and temptation
By my side.
It’s shining, silently begging
For my lips to open wide.
A serpent’s tongue poisons my ear,
Speaking not for what’s right.
Would falling again
For the genesis of sin
Be worth every consequence?
If temptation is stronger
Than my will to fight,
Would it ruin your life and mine
If I took a bite?
